We are not the enemy

President Trump vigorously fans the flames of hatred against the press by repeating that the media and the free press of this country are the “enemy of the American people.”
It is reckless, dangerous and unprecendented for the person holding the highest office in the land to ignite such hate towards a profession that aims to serve the public with knowledge and vetted information.
Trump’s press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, during a White House press briefing, declined to back away from her boss’ assessment and blamed the press for the tensions between the media and the administration.
The idea of a free press is enshrined in the Constitution via the First Amendment. The job of the free press is to dig out the truth and unflinchingly present it to the public. It is not the job of the press to produce propaganda that shows the powerful in the most positive light.
We are not the enemy of the people. As the publisher of the Washington Post once said, “Newspapers write the first draft of history.” We are eye witnesses to the good, the bad and the ugly and we report it for present and future generations to learn.
Granted, this president would love nothing more than a country without a free press, but we — reporters, journalists, photographers, and chroniclers of our times — have been here before him and will be here long after him.
We are not the enemy of the people. —D.H.—
