Julie “Inuuq” Alowa Downey
Julie “Inuuq” Alowa Downey was born on December 15, 1947 in Savoonga, Alaska to Ellie Gologergen Alowa and Isaac Alowa. She passed away peacefully on July 23, 2023 surrounded closely by her loving children and family.
Julie grew up in Nome, Alaska with her cherished siblings Allen Alowa, Jenny Alowa, Jackie Wilson and Glenn Kulukhon. After graduating from Nome-Beltz High School, she went on to attend Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, as well as the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Julie inspired others with her optimistic outlook on life. She could be heard encouraging loved ones not to waste energy on negativity, but to look for the positive in every situation. As a woman of God she would often share her favorite bible verses with those who were struggling. One of her favorites was Psalm 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it!”
In her children she instilled strength and independence, as those were the traits she herself carried. A humble person by nature, she valued respect and generosity for others, always leaning toward forgiveness above all else.
Julie is survived by her four children Joel Alowa (Kim Bebout), Mike Downey (Denise Downey), Isaac Jackson (Marla Lopez) and Ellie Mora (Justin Mora); sisters Jenny Alowa (Bill Dann) and Jackie Wilson (Verner Wilson); 10 grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved her dearly.
Julie is preceded in death by her parents Isaac Alowa and Ellie Gologergen Alowa, brothers Allen Alowa and Glenn Kulukhon, nephew Verner Wilson III and granddaughter Alannah Alowa.
Those fortunate enough to have known Julie will forever remember the depth of her love and compassion for her friends and family in Anchorage, Nome and Savoonga. Her affection was genuine, evident to all who crossed her path. As she gracefully approached the end of her journey, she carried herself with dignity, strength, and an unwavering love for those around her. The void left by her absence will be deeply felt, and her memory will be cherished dearly by all who were touched by her remarkable presence.
A celebration of life for Julie will be held on Sunday, July 30 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 616 W. 10th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501.
