Richard Allen Miller

August 28, 1947 ~ January 28, 2020

Richard Allen Miller was born on August 28, 1947 in Nome, Alaska to Andrew Miller Sr. and Hannah (Alexine) Miller.  He died peacefully on January 28, 2020, at age 72, surrounded by his family.

After graduating from Nome High School in 1965, Richard joined the Navy and served with the SeaBees in Viet Nam.  After returning to Nome, he worked for Chuck Fagerstrom at Stop Shop and Save. He served as the President of Sitnasuak as well as manager at Bonanza.  He retired as a Correctional Officer at Anvil Mountain Correction Center for 17 years and served as a firearms instructor during that time as well.

After his stroke in 1999, he was grateful to work at Outsiders Construction part time until 2017.

In 1971, Richard married Angela Norbert in Nome, Alaska.  Everyone knew them as Luvy & Luvy, their nicknames for each other.  They were blessed with three children, Jason, Sharon and Jeremiah (Jerry Joe).

Richard enjoyed many hobbies.  He was an avid reader, enjoyed putting together puzzles at camp and loved to make cinnamon rolls and bake breads.  He enjoyed darts, bowling, beanbags and playing cards.  Richard was known for his wonderful sense of humor, always teasing.  Many people have commented how he always made them smile and laugh.

Sports were always a source of entertainment for Richard.  He was a member of the 1964 Nome High School basketball team that won the state championship.  He continued to play city league basketball as an adult, on the Polar Hornets team.

He played softball for Outsiders as a pitcher.  He served as a volunteer at Iditarod basketball games for many years.  He enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports as well.

Richard enjoyed many subsistence activities, including fishing, moose hunting, crabbing and berry picking.  As often as possible, he and his family were out in the country, and enjoyed working together to provide for his extended family.  He was especially proud to have his children and grandchildren participate and learn at camp.

Richard is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Angela Miller, of Nome, Alaska; his children Jason (Amy) Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Sharon (Denny) Hickerson of Kotzebue, Alaska, and Jeremiah (Maritza) Miller of Chula Vista, California; siblings Carol Piscoya and Andrew Miller, of Nome, Alaska, and Barbara Miller of Soldotna, Alaska.  He was very proud of his 14 grandchildren:  Anne, Paige and Emilie Miller, Esther James, Paul Hickerson, Nicole (Tommy) Benis, Winona Hickerson, Rena Hickerson, Trevor Miller-Hickerson, Bret Hickerson and Jodi Hickerson, Danny Flores, and Angela and Andrew Miller.  He was blessed with three great-granchildren Hayden Benis, Easton Lacy and Hannah James-Tiuan.  Richard had many nieces and nephews who were proud to call him Uncle.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Hannah Miller, and his siblings Gladys Miller Crow, James Miller, Harvey Miller, Edward Miller, Kenneth Miller, Martin (Snowball) Miller, Franklin Miller and Sharon Miller.
