For the second time, The Nome Nugget has signed up for updates on the official www.whitehouse.com website. There it is, a big fat button in the middle of the page, just under the picture of the solemn looking 45th President of the U.S.A. with his right hand up and the left hand on the bible held by Melania Trump. “Sign up for Updates”. Enter your email and zipcode and then “your submission has been received.” That submission, like the first one I sent and the requests for information on the President’s take on Arctic policy, have been apparently swallowed by a black hole.
No updates. So sad.
Maybe at the White House they’re real busy with drafting policy to keep those pesky immigrants out of our great nation. After all, can’t have all those immigrants. I am one of them. I should know that hard working, well-educated foreign-borns are a threat to this nation. They, along with the media are the worst, is the thinking at the top.
Ah, maybe that’s why we’re excluded from updates.
It appears it’s about time to pull up the gangplank and kick out the persecuted, who seek asylum, the adventurous and hungry, who look for a fresh new start in the land of opportunity, and the ‘undocumented’ like they have some kind of uncurable disease.
“Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free/The wretched refuse of your teeming shore/Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
Emma Lazarus wrote those words that are carved in a bronze plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty. The days of compassion and of a deep understanding of human history, which is the history of migration, seem to be over.
Is a country run by fear, run by uncertainty and by an unpredictable despotic narcissist a country you want to live in?
The immigration ban that is challenged in court is only one of the many things that are puzzling. Any of the other things that this 45th president has said and done would do “normal” politicians in and exclude them for a lifetime from public office. Here are some examples: Trump has not released his taxes; since the early campaign days, there is something fishy going on between the Trump campaign and/or Trump Organization and with Russia and the Ukraine; the National Security Adviser resigned because he lied to the Vice President; the president repeatedly lies to the nation (Sweden. Crowd sizes. Election numbers.); and the president’s constant attacks on the free press as “dishonest” and “fake” are attacks on a vital part of a democracy. I wish a Trump supporter could explain to me in a rational way how all that chaos, disruption and fear-mongering is going to make this nation great again. —D.H.—
