Mike’s life was defined by his loving nature, kindness, sharp wit, and remarkable intelligence. He grew up in Nome, attending Nome Beltz Jr./Sr. High School, where he played on the Nanook Basketball team. Gifted in mathematics and problem-solving from an early age, his talents remained a constant thread throughout his life.
In 1985, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving as a Blackhawk Helicopter mechanic. His dedication, technical expertise, and work ethic earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow service members. Following his service, he furthered his education at the Spartan School of Aeronautics.

He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews and always sought ways to contribute to his family the best way he knew how, even though he sometimes struggled with feelings of being a burden. Despite these challenges, he built lifelong friendships in Nome and throughout the Bering Strait Region.
