Nathanial “Nate” Cushman
It is with great sadness that the family of Nathanial (Nate) Cushman shares the news of his passing on the morning of November 24, 2025.
He was 23 years old.
For those who knew Nate, his love of life was unmistakable. He met every challenge head-on — sometimes winning, sometimes not — but always with a smirk and a twinkle in his eye.
He was well-known for finding trouble and equally known for his overwhelming generosity, often giving away his dad’s tools without hesitation.
Nate was surrounded by a large circle of friends who kept the neighborhood on its toes. He loved riding dirt bikes, snow machines and four-wheelers, and he was an outdoors enthusiast. He was rarely seen without at least three friends or “brothers” by his side, a trend that followed him through his military service, too.
Nate attended school primarily in Nome, graduating in 2020. Shortly afterward, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving with Headquarters Battalion in Washington, D.C., and later with 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton.
In September 2022, while stationed in Washington, D.C., surrounded by family and friends, Nate married the love of his life, Rebekah S. Osborne, from Wasilla, Alaska. Around Rebekah, his regular demeaner turned loving and tender, and his voice turned smooth like honey. Together they explored the lower continuous 48 and had a life of passion, love, friendships and adventure.
After five years of honorable service, Nate recently separated from the Marine Corps and moved to Wasilla, Alaska, with his wife and their beloved dogs, Luna and Rexy.
Nate is preceded in death by his grandfathers Charles Ronald LaBar and Thomas Rhea Cushman.
He is survived by his wife Rebekah S. Cushman; his brother, Thomas R. Cushman; his parents; both grandmothers; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws.
There will be a Celebration of Life in Nome on Dec. 14 at the VFW Post #9569 from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
Nathanial will be buried with military honors at Miramar VA Cemetery next to Camp Pendleton, in California on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at 2:30 p.m.
Another Celebration of Life will follow immediately after with his family, extended family and military brothers.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers or food, donations be made to Tunnels to Towers or The Til Valhalla Project.
Twenty-two veteran suicides a day are twenty-two too many.
